“Save Birth, Change The World”
We were once given some advice about film-making. If you can walk away from making a film, then don’t walk away, RUN! Simply put, film-making is a long hard slog and if you’re not completely 100% convinced about the project, then don’t make the film.
For me and my ONE WORLD BIRTH co-creator and life partner Alex Wakeford, this was a project that we couldn’t walk away from. We had this vision, that if we could create a video resource website and a full length documentary feature film about the red-hot issues surrounding birth and somehow get them into the mainstream, then we could help thousands if not millions if not billions of women around the world have a better more empowered birth.
We believed in the vision and that belief hasn’t wavered over the past 12 months as we’ve worked on the project. That belief has led us to film interviews with so many of the world’s leading experts:
Ina May Gaskin, Sheila Kitzinger, Michel Odent, Dr Sarah Buckley, Elizabeth Davis, Debra-Pascali Bonaro, Marilyn Curl (President, Lamaze International), Mary Newburn (Head of Research & Information, NCT), Beverley Beech (Chair, AIMS), Professor Soo Downe, Professor Lesley Page, Professor Cecily Begley, Professor Kerstin Uvnas-Moberg, Professor Sally Tracy, Professor Ngai Fen Cheung, Associate Professor Denis Walsh plus other leading authors, academics, midwives, obstetricians, doulas, campaigners, birth educators and birth warriors!
But it hasn’t been an easy journey. It’s cost us massively financially. We’ve had no outside funding so we have paid for everything on ONE WORLD BIRTH ourselves from the profits of our DOULA! documentary film (we haven’t taken a penny ourselves!)
Time-wise, we constantly have to juggle childcare issues with fitting in other paid work and spending time on this project.
Both of us have had moments when we thought our ONE WORLD BIRTH project was beyond us; it was too overwhelming, too much needed to be done in terms of building a website, shooting and editing all the interviews, creating an army of birth warriors and setting the stage to change the world. Other doulas and midwives talk about changing perceptions one birth at a time, we wanted to change the whole world all in one go!
But despite all the difficulties and stresses, through it all, we retained a core belief in our vision. We still have that belief and together, the two of us have grown stronger as a couple because of that belief. We are now so proud of ourselves that we have pulled it off and stage 1 of our master plan – the rollout of a FREE video site featuring the world’s leading birth experts – is live (http://oneworldbirth.net)
Still we have a long journey ahead of us. We want to keep on filming, to keep on building the resources, to keep on growing the community and next year we will release the full length documentary. All building towards the moment when we can make the tipping point happen and we can help deliver real change to the world’s maternity systems.
Now there’s no chance we’ll walk away from this. We have only just begun. And you can help us – join our revolution and let’s together help empower ALL women to have better births around the world!
