The end of 2011 saw two amazing midwives honoured with international awards. Ina May Gaskin was awarded the prestigious Right Livelihood Award (the alternative Nobel Prize) and Robin Lim won the CNN Hero Of the Year Award.

Now already in 2012,  a UK midwife has just been honoured by the Queen!

Sheena Byrom, a consultant midwife and author of the best-selling memoir “Catching Babies”, has just been recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honour list 2012. Sheena has received an OBE for services to nursing.

Sheena Byrom OBE

Here at One World Birth, we think this is a marvellous personal achievement but  it is also vitally important for the OWB community worldwide.

Because of the way the British Honours system works,  it shows that Midwifery and a mother’s rights to a natural or midwife led birth are formally recognised by Government (the Prime Minister and the Department of Health) and supported by the UK Public Health Authorities.

So this should be a great encouragement for those who are battling against their own Establishments.

Congratulations Sheena!
