BIRTH – HUMAN RIGHTS
Freedom For Birth Unleashed
Toni Harman, Co-founder of One World Birth
15th November 2016
When we launched FREEDOM FOR BIRTH in 2012, we had 1000 screenings in 17 languages in 50 countries. That was great, brilliant in fact.
It felt as if we were cresting a wave; we were helping propel human rights in childbirth as an important issue into the mainstream and people were paying attention.
Organisations like Human rights in Childbirth, Birthrights, Improving Birth and the Positive Birth Movement (to name a few) have carried the momentum making women’s rights in childbirth a powerful global movement.
To a certain extent, we felt “job done” and we turned our attention onto the microbial world to make the film MICROBIRTH.
But we never forgot about human rights in childbirth. We never stopped caring.
Recently, with the rise in media reports about human rights abuses in childbirth and with the ongoing criminal charges faced by Agnes Gereb , and now this week with the disappointing news from the European Court of Human Rights that the Grand Chamber ruled against home birth in the Dubska and Krejzova vs Czech Republic case, this has re-focused our attention on women’s rights in childbirth.
In fact, the injustices we see happening right now are fuelling our passion.
We’ve become fired up again. We’re ready to take action. Ready to once again to use our skills to propel this important issue further into the public spotlight.
It feels like this is a moment.
Let’s seize that moment.
Let’s create another wave of passion for human rights in childbirth.
We can play our part.
We’ve removed all restrictions on showing our FREEDOM FOR BIRTH film for public screenings (not including institutions or online use).
We’ve cut the price of the DVD price to $12.49 including shipping.
This means you can use the DVD for public screenings, classroom use and for showing it to your friends for low-cost.
In 2012, we were inspired by the people we featured in FREEDOM FOR BIRTH, including Anna Ternovszky, Agnes Gereb, Sheila Kitzinger, Ina May Gaskin and lawyers Hermine Hayes-Klein and Elizabeth Proschaska.
Their words are just as relevant today. Let’s unleash their power.
So, take our FREEDOM FOR BIRTH film and have a screening. Spread awareness. Make change happen. Together, let’s demand full informed freedom of choice in childbirth.
In the words of the late great Sheila Kitzinger.
“Women will take back childbirth”.
Let’s make it happen.
